Liturgical Furnishings
The presence, location, and design of the liturgical furnishings in the Church of the Transfiguration are markers signifying that these are fundamental to the purpose and meaning of the entire church. Upon entering the church, the viewer sees three fixed marble furnishings aligned on the central processional path: the font, the ambo, and the altar. While the stories in the frescoes and mosaics surrounding these furnishings testify to the action occurring there, the furnshings themselves — their placement at the beginning, middle, and end of the processional path; their permanency as architectural elements in the church; and the materials used in their fabrication — are witnesses to the sacrament of baptism, the reading of the Word, and the sacrament of Eucharist as life-giving and life-affirming gifts.
